That certainly is ideal but I find that when I really mess up I kind of want to throw the towel in. What consistently works is when I give it back to Christ and let him do the controlling. What I need to constantly do is admit I am incapable of accomplishing this without HIM.

Have you tried getting together a bit of a calorie deficit in the few days before? If you have good self control, this might work well. e.g. if you know you have a party coming up, eat 100 less calories a few days before then use up your credits on the day of the party. I think planning for events makes all the difference.

But what if the flesh REALLY takes over and I go over my daily allotment by 2000 calories? Or how about the situations where several days of fleshly eating get strung together?

These are the situations that frustrate me the most. It seems like when I am on track all is OK but if I get off track for a couple of days my resolve goes down the tubes and the flesh takes over. I know that God will not tempt be beyond what I can bear but I don't always remember to claim that in my times of weakness.

I agree with your second choice, with the caveat that your goal would be to not overeat by more than 400-500 calories (or some other reasonable number). That way it would be reasonable to expect you could readjust your eating pattern in the following two days to cover the extra indulgence.
